Before moving

The eight weeks that decide how smooth the rest goes.

  • Check your relocation grant eligibility

Find out in two minutes whether your move qualifies for support before you commit to costs.

    Run the checker →
  • Shortlist neighbourhoods

Compare transport, amenities and typical prices across Inverclyde so you view properties in the right places.

    Browse area guides →
  • Line up work or confirm your remote setup

Local employers hire year-round across care, healthcare, logistics and manufacturing. Check what is open before you move.

    See local jobs →
  • Budget the move

Deposit, first month's rent, removals, and a buffer for the first fortnight. Our calculator gives you a monthly running cost too.

    Estimate costs →
  • Arrange a removals quote

Book early for end-of-month and summer dates, which go first.

    See removal partners →
  • Give notice on your current home

Check the notice period in your tenancy or the timeline on your sale so the two dates do not collide.

  • Book temporary accommodation if your dates do not line up

A short-term let for a week or two is cheaper than a rushed decision on a long lease.

Moving week

Logistics. Keep this list short and get through it.

  • Confirm removals and access

Reconfirm the time, the parking, and who holds the keys at both ends.

  • Set up broadband and utilities

Book the broadband install before you move — appointment lead times are the usual cause of a first fortnight without internet.

    Broadband partners →
  • Take meter readings at both properties

Photograph the readings on the day. It settles almost every billing dispute.

  • Redirect your post

Royal Mail redirection covers the gap while you update addresses one by one.

  • Pack an arrival box

Kettle, bedding, chargers, tools, medication, and a change of clothes — carried in the car, not the van.

First 30 days

Registrations, and the small things that make somewhere home.

  • Register for council tax

Tell Inverclyde Council you have moved in. Single-person discount applies if you live alone.

  • Register with a GP practice

Practices cover set catchment areas and can close their lists, so register early rather than when you first need an appointment.

  • Register with a dentist

NHS dental lists in the area move slowly. Get your name down in the first month.

  • Update your driving licence and vehicle records

DVLA address changes are free and keep your insurance valid.

Register at your new address so you are on the roll for local and national elections.

  • Find your local anchors

Library, leisure centre, GP, the good coffee. Settling in is mostly logistics until suddenly it is not.
